Grantham’s reputation as a great place to eat was enhanced at the East Midlands Food and Drink Awards on Sunday.

The area produced 11 finalists and two winners at the ceremony, held at Greetham Valley Hotel, Golf and Conference Centre.

Leading the charge was town centre eatery Eden Wine Bar with four nominations as a finalist and winning a trophy in a fifth when named best venue. The other Grantham winner was Indian restaurant Bindi, who won the best special event caterer category.

The awards were co-hosted by Journal editor Paul Richardson and celebrity chef Aldo Zilli. More than 180 people from across the region attended.

Mr Richardson said: “These awards area testimony to all of the fantastic places there are to eat and drink in the Lincolnshire/Rutland and Greater Peterborough areas – all winners and finalists should be very proud of their achievements.

“It was particularly pleasing for me to see Grantham so well represented and doing so well.”

Mr Zilli said: “This has been an excellent night. The people here really care about food and customer service. They are my kind of people. I only hope that during these tough times they stick to their principles and customers reward them with their loyalty.”

Organised by East Midland Newspapers Ltd, the awards competition began in July 2012 and ran in 12 papers across the East Midlands. Winners were those which received the most votes from their customers and readers throughout all newspaper titles. Thousands of votes were received since the start of the competition.

Eden Wine Bar were finalists in best bar, best customer service/front of house, best gastro pub and best European restaurant before picking up their win.

Bindi was twice a finalist – for best chef and local food hero before winning the award.

Other local finalists were: Bombay Brasserie in the best Indian restaurant, Liberty Rose’s for best newcomer, Siam Garden for best Oriental restaurant and Stoke Rochford Hall for best hotel restaurant.
