A MOTHER and son were covered in glass this morning when stones from Barrowby Road Bridge smashed through their sunroof.
Kerry and Lewis Brailsford were travelling under the bridge on their way to Nottingham just before 8.30am when the incident happened.
Kerry said: “I just feel shocked. The stones fell and smashed the sunroof.
“I didn’t see them coming, just heard the impact and we were covered in glass. I suppose I’m just unlucky.”
Police have closed the road in both directions while investigations into the incident are carried out. The road is expected to remain closed for a couple of hours.
A spokesman for Network Rail said that vibrations from the trains moved a metal plate, which was covering a gap in the bridge. This allowed stone chippings to get through.
They are working to repair the plate and checking that there are no other problems.
