A slap-up fish and chip supper is a real bargain at Relax Fish Bar

Food review of the week at Relax Fish Bar. 097C

A CRACKING chippy tea is on offer at the excellent but terribly named Relax Fish Bar in Westgate.

First up, you’d better be hungry because the sheer amount of chips which make up a single portion is easily enough for two. Frankly, whenever myself and the wife go in there we only ever order one to split (yes, she is a very lucky lady).

The chips are usually top notch but on this occasion I’d say they were looking slightly pale. However, more importantly, they were soft inside and tasted delicious.

The fish was also a cracking size and a delight to eat. Some might have preferred their batter a little crispier but for me - not usually being a fan of batter - it was just right.

Being a stereotypical northerner I even had gravy on my fish and chips, and the gravy at Relax is five-star.

Believe me when I tell you, I’ve eaten my fair share of chip shop gravy over the years and their’s is among the best.

The wife had a sausage - non-battered - which she thoroughly enjoyed.

The chippy itself is quite traditional - despite the name - although it does sell doner meat which I found borderline offensive.

We opted for a late night take-out but those wishing to do something special for their loved ones this Valentine’s Day (while spending less than £9) can opt to eat in.

All-in-all it is a great spot for a chippy tea. Now, if only they would change that name!
