Get plenty of R&R at the college Retreat in Grantham

Need some R&R? Then head to Grantham’s new salon of the same name.

Thanks to its location a stone’s throw from the River Witham, R&R stands for Riverside Retreat rather than rest and relaxation, although you will get plenty of that.

R&R is located in the imposing Stonebridge House, now owned by Grantham College, and the services are offered to customers by the college’s student hairdressers and beauty therapists.

R&R is set out like a professional establishment. To one side of the sweeping reception is the hair salon and to the other is the beauty treatment area.

The idea was to create more of a commercial enterprise, said hairdressing course leader Audrey Thorpe.

She added: “It’s absolutely excellent for the students because we are planning to run it more like a business. It looks more commercial and works in a commercial way, but it’s for the students and the town really.

“It’s more like a salon on the High Street because students these days have to be commercial to gain employment. We hope the new look will encourage people to use it.”

Audrey’s hopes for the salon were echoed by beauty therapy course leader Heidi Marshall, who added: “It’s exciting, it’s fresh, it’s vibrant.”

R&R was officially opened earlier this month by two special guests – former hairdressing student Josh Featherstone and Eve Taylor, founder of Eve Taylor Cosmetics.

It was a big day for the college as it represented the culmination of months of hard work.

Development of the college site meant the hair and beauty departments had to move and this presented an opportunity to re-brand the former Premier Hair & Beauty as R&R, a name suggested by a student.

College principal Linda Houtby said: “We are a college for the town and the people and it would greatly support our students if the community would use the facilities.”

More than 75 people went along to an open day to take a look around the new salon, where students were giving taster treatments.

As well as offering a pamper package on a Friday, the salon regularly holds taster days where treatments are offered at reduced prices. To make an appointment call 01476 400237 or email aparish@grantham.ac.uk
