A fruit and veg stall which has been part of Grantham Market for almost 50 years was set up for the final time on Saturday.

Customers of Sam’s Fruit and Veg stall said their tearful goodbyes to the team – made up of Sam Tomlinson, Michael Storey, and Dave and Monica Green.

In a note to customers, Sam wrote: “I have decided that the time has come to semi-retire and spend some well-earned quality time with my wife Linda.”

Sam took over the stall from his father, Roy, 30 years ago, after helping his dad from the age of six.

Dave sent in the above photo, taken some years ago when the stall was located in front of what was Sorrento’s in Market Place. He said: “The stall as been moved around the market more than five times while the Market Place has been improved, but the customers have stayed loyal and fallowed us wherever we were moved to. It is a very sad day for Grantham Market when a very long-established stall closes and will not be replaced.

“One thing that stood out was the lack of support from the council – no-one came down and said goodbye, it was the end of an era, 48 years by one family.”

Dave added: “It was a very sad day for us on Saturday, and the loyal customers; they brought us little gifts and we got loads of hugs, tears were flowing.”
