environCom in Grantham is presented with a respected award
Environcom
A firm based in Grantham has won a prestigious award.
The Recycling Performance of the Year award was presented to environCom in recognition of its method of purifying PUR Foam, the insulation found in fridges.
The award was presented by Countryfile’s Julia Bradbury at the annual Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) Awards for Environmental Excellence.
The development of the technique involved 12 months of research and development with specialists in Europe and the USA. The company has shared its method with competitors, and in doing so it has prevented 2,800 tonnes of foam from being sent to landfill sites. Group commercial director Graeme Parkin said: “As a company our main target is to do the right thing.
“We want to work with other companies, even if they are competitors, to ensure we are making positive strides within the waste industry.” environCom is located on Spittlegate Level. The plant receives around half a million fridges for recycling each year, and has traditionally had to either incinerate the PUR Foam or send it to landfill.
Since the implementation of the purification process, it have been able to divert 2,400 tonnes of the material and has increased its fridge recycling rate from 88 per cent to 99 per cent.
The foam is now modified so that it can be used by a partner company that specialises in the manufacture of wood-based laminate products.
Chief executive of the awards body Steve Lee said: “This year’s winners reflect the very real environmental and economic benefits – both to business and society – of waste prevention, recycling and resource efficiency.
“They showcase best practice and demonstrate that our sector is committed to innovation and excellence and is increasingly engaged with a range of other industries and stakeholders to deliver a more sustainable future.”
environCom recycles waste electrical and electronic items.
