A planning application for the £100 million Grantham Designer Outlet Village has been submitted to South Kesteven District Council today.

The proposed development of around 130 shops would create approximately 1,500 jobs and attract up to 3.5 million visitors a year. SKDC will evaluate the plans before making a decision later in the year.

Submission of the application was delayed to allow for further work to be done on the highways aspects of the plan.

Stephen Vickers, of Grantham investor and landowners Buckminster: said: “The Designer Outlet Village will be accessed by a new junction off the A1 and this clearly is something that we need to get absolutely right,

“Following advice, we needed to make sure that all our surveys, assumptions and calculations regarding traffic generation and flows were as accurate as possible - we’ve got to get this right first time.”

The applicant carried out a consultation exercise in September and October last year which revealed that 82 per cent of those who responded were in favour of the proposals.

Specialist designer outlet village developer Rioja Developments has teamed up with Buckminster to bring the plans forward on a 36-acre section of the King 31 land, on the southern edge of Grantham, next to the Grantham Southern Relief Road and the A1.

Giles Membrey, Managing Director of Rioja Developments, said: “There is considerable demand for a designer outlet village in the East of England area and we feel Grantham is the ideal location. Designer outlet villages are unlike other retail developments in that they feature upmarket quality brands most, if not all of which, you won’t find in any typical market town. They are heavily discounted between 30 per cent and 50 per cent and tend to attract customers from up to 90 minutes away, often as part of a day out.

“Designer outlet villages are often regarded as tourist attractions. The scheme would therefore be designed to complement, and not compete, with the existing town centre, bringing people who wouldn’t otherwise be coming to the area.”

Research shows that around 10 per cent of the visitors to a designer outlet village spend money elsewhere in the town. This means that there’s potential for 350,000 new shoppers to visit Grantham town centre, and the proposals include a dedicated bus service to encourage this. This major development will provide a catalyst for further investment and jobs. Drawing in people from both this region as well as wider afield, the scheme will increase confidence and bring more trade to the town centre.”
