Downtown staff have chosen Cancer research UK as their charity of the year.
Downtown and Downtown Garden Centre in Grantham chose the charity as their 2016 partner following a vote in which all staff took part.
Throughout the year, staff and customers will raise money to hit the £20,000 target which will go towards pioneering research to help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
Lisa Bracey, Store manager at the Downtown Superstore in Gonerby Moor, said: “Cancer affects so many people and many friends, loved ones and colleagues have been touched by it. That’s why at Downtown we’re committed to raising as much money as we can to help beat cancer sooner.
“I am confident that our customers will help our enthusiastic teams pull out all the stops to reach our goal. We have all kinds of fundraising events in the pipeline including hosting dress down days, coffee mornings, cake sales, and a sponsored slim. We also have a major event on August 20 and 21 in which Charles Hanson (Bargain Hunt, Cash in the Attic )and his team will be at the store and available to value visitors collectables for a donation to the charity.”
Ben Petts, Local Fundraising Manager at Cancer Research UK, said, “Every two minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer. With the help of Oldrids and Downtown staff and customers we’re working to fund research which will help more men, women and children survive.
“It’s fantastic that Oldrids and Downtown have pledged to raise such an incredible amount of money for us in the coming year and we wish them the best of luck with their fund-raising. The funds will go towards the charity’s research to beat over 200 types of cancer, helping to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.”
Although the number of people being diagnosed with cancer is going up, survival rates have doubled in the past 40 years. For more information on Cancer Research UK visit www.cancerresearchuk.org
