Friday, 10.30am - A BOTTESFORD designer has invented a new product aimed at reducing food waste.Lyndsey Young, of Open Design, has invented a labelling system called Count On It, which allows people to keep track of the age of food in the fridge.
The stick-on labels feature scratch-away panels which show when a product was first opened, stored, or frozen.
According to WRAP – the Waste and Resources Action Programme – UK households throw away 6.7 million tonnes of food each year.
Lyndsey hopes the labels can help people reduce the amount of food they throw away and save money.
She said: "I came up with the concept of Count On It as a I was always throwing away half-used jars because I was never sure how long they had been in my fridge – I was not going to risk giving it to my sons, so I had the inconvenience and cost of repurchasing.
"It's the start of a new way of thinking and I'm hoping I'm going to be on the crest of the wave."
A box of 25 labels - enough for a month - costs 2.50.
