06/04/07 - Campaigners vow to maintain pressure
CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Grantham Hospital have vowed to maintain pressure during a public consultation on health services due to start next month.
CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Grantham Hospital have vowed to maintain pressure during a public consultation on health services due to start next month.Last week United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust announced A and E at Grantham would be maintained for the foreseeable future - and the savings of 44.6 million over the next three years would be made through efficiency measures and changes to the management of the trust's estate.
New rules also came into force last week governing which patients can be treated at Grantham Hospital following the decision to withdraw emergency general surgery.
Grantham Hospital Defence Committee chairman Ian Mihill said: "I think its hugely positive.
"I know there are a number of events which will go to other hospitals, but of the 33,000 patients it treats each year, it's only about 100.
"The focus of the defense committee now is to make sure that Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust ratifies the decision and makes sure they stick to their word.
"We've been told nothing's changing before and it has. We've got to make sure the PCT supports it before we hang our boots up."
The committee is continuing fund-raising activities should it need to extend its campaign, and will donate any left over money to Grantham Hospital.
