Retired ATS man Lawrence Cleaver is known as ‘Lol’ to his friends and on his personalised number plate – a nickname he had long before ‘Lol’ meant laugh out loud.

He often has a laugh when he meets up with friends around town, as well as through being a member of Kontak’s fishing club.

Lawrence describes the club as very friendly, but adds that it can get quite competitive when they are fishing in matches as part of the local league.

His biggest success in the competition came in 2006, when he recevied trophies for several catches including a three-pound tench and a carp weighing eight pound four ounces.

Lawrence lives in Primrose Way, having moved here in 1980, and says he likes being close to the countryside, and of course within an easy distance of the rivers!

He spent 40 years at ATS and worked at its former site on East Street, which he enjoyed due to the interaction with customers.

Lawrence has a 33-year-old daughter called Helen.
