MPs are privileged to meet some extraordinary people

This week, after a long campaign led by Lincolnshire resident Trevor Lakin, the Government finally did the right thing for the British victims of the terrorist attacks abroad, and announced that they will soon receive compensation, despite the fact that injuries sustained overseas were not covered by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme.
This is a good result for the people who were injured in these attacks.
Not least Will Pike, who was left paralysed after trying to escape from his hotel room during the attacks in Mumbai.
The achievement of it is almost entirely due to the tireless efforts of Trevor, who lost his son Jeremy in the Sharm-el-Sheik bombing, and Will’s father, Nigel.
Before the last election, they persuaded all three main parties that paying compensation was the right thing to do.
And, through their dogged persistence over the last eighteen months, they have now secured the fulfilment of that promise. I have had the honour to meet Trevor a few times since being elected and have been struck both by his quiet dignity and by his unwavering resolve to gain a small measure of justice for those victims who were lucky enough to survive these appalling attacks.
Nothing can ever compensate Trevor for the loss of his son, Jeremy.
But I hope that he will find some consolation in the knowledge that, thanks to him, Will Pike, and others like him, will now be better able to rebuild their lives.
You get to meet some extraordinary people in my job but none more so than Trevor Lakin.
