Mr H. W. Sharpe

MR Hugh Warner Sharpe, of Normanton, Bottesford, has died in Red Rose Nursing Home, Farndon. He was 91.

Mr Sharpe was the youngest of three children. He had a brother Richard, who died in 1943 during the Second World War and his sister Elisabeth predeceased him in 1998.

Mr Sharpe served in the Signals Corps, mainly in North Africa and then Italy. After the Second World War he had a long and distinguished career as a journalist, working in the city office of the London Evening Standard and the London office of the Sheffield Telegraph. During this time he lived in Islington.

Although very work orientated, Mr Sharpe enjoyed holidays with his sister Elisabeth, nephew Rob and aunt Millicent, particularly to the Lake District.

He moved to Normanton to be near his family in 1999, and edited and improved the magazine of the Newark Civic Society. He also enjoyed his time as a guide at the Town Hall Museum.

Mr Sharpe made many friends at the Beaumond House Hospice and later when he moved to Red Rose Nursing Home, he made friends among the staff and residents. He remained mentally alert by completing crossword puzzles and reading voraciously.

The funeral service was held at Grantham Crematorium Chapel, conducted by the Rev Dr Mark Smith.

Family mourners included: Rob and Linda Sharpe, Danny Sharpe, Maddie Sharpe, Barrie Wells, Pam Robbins and Nicola Sheeran.

Other mourners included: Rodney and Kate Johnson, James and Linda Levi, John Westwell, Jane and Bill Davidson, Paula and Will Wiseman, John Baggaley, Allan and Jane Mulcahy, Kathleen Strickland, Barbara Cleaver and John Palmer.

Funeral arrangements were by William Roberts and Sons, Devon Lane, Bottesford.

Donations for Beaumond House amount to £277.55 to date.
