A district councillor who has campaigned tirelessly to save and improve Grantham’s ambulance station is celebrating some very good news this week.

Coun Ian Selby fought plans to close Grantham’s ambulance station after East Midlands Ambulance Service revealed plans to replace ambulance stations with a series of hubs throughout the region - none of which would be in Grantham.

However, following a campaign and a petition signed by more 12,000 people, EMAS looked again at their plans.

In March EMAS approved new draft plans that would see Grantham be home to one of only three hubs in the county.

For the last six months Coun Selby has been seeking final confirmation that Grantham will get a hub and this week it arrived.

A letter by Jon Sargeant, EMAS’ director of finance and performance, to Coun Selby said: “Grantham is part of our 28 hub model which means it will be retained and refurbished as a hub.

“Staff will start their shift from the hub and collect a fully equipped, well maintained and clean vehicle.

“The hub will also be used for providing training and support for clinicians and support staff.

“This will improve the overall work environment and enable staff to provide a better service to patients.

“In the current scheme, the Grantham ambulance station will remain open for the time being and will be upgraded in the future.”

The news was welcomed by Coun Selby, however he will not break out the champagne until he sees the hub up and running.

Coun Selby said: “After a magnificent petition last year organised by the Last GASP action group, it is reassuring to receive confirmation of the positive EMAS plans for Grantham.

“Although I am quietly optimistic, I am not doing somersaults or jumping through hoops just yet until I actually see their plans coming to fruition.”
