A false widow spider, the most venomous species found in Britain, has been spotted in Grantham.

Rox Byrne, 24, posted a photo of the poisonous spider on the Journal’s Facebook page to “warn people” after noticing it crawling up the hallway wall at her Grantham home.

She said: “It is very creepy, was very quick too. My husband came to the rescue.”

But there is no need to panic – experts say the false widows are unlikely to cause any real harm.

Symptoms of a bite range from numbness, severe swelling and discomfort, to burning or chest pains, depending on the amount of venom injected.

There have been no reported deaths from a false widow bite in the UK.

A change in climate has been blamed for the increase in false widow populations...so it is likely we will see a lot more of the creatures.
