A NERVOUS and inexperienced young driver caused a double fatal smash after getting lost on her way to her first day in a new job, Lincoln Crown Court was told.

Jean Matthews, 60, of Stamford Street, Grantham, was killed along with a friend from Corringham near Gainsborough, when Lindsay Smith drifted across the road and hit their car head-on in September 2010.

Smith was seriously injured in the crash on the A631 at Harpswell Hill, near Gainsborough. She suffered fractures to her right thigh, left ankle and right arm.

She was later unable to recollect the collision.

Smith, 21, from Grimsby, admitted two charges of causing death by careless driving.

She was jailed for nine months and banned from driving for three years.
