NatWest says it has paid back £23,000 to the 93-year-old war veteran who was the victim of a distraction theft in the bank’s Grantham branch.

The eldlerly man was using his card at an ATM machine inside the bank on Monday, December 14, when his card was stolen from him. Over the next few days £23,000 was stolen from his account from banks in Nottinghamshire, the West Midlands and London.

A spokesman for NatWest said: “Unfortunately, our customer fell victim to a callous distraction technique whilst using an ATM. We have refunded all the money to the customer and continue to do everything we can to help the police identify the criminals.”

DI Simon Bromiley, who is leading the investigation, said: “What is quite clear from our enquiries so far is that these three men were very-well organised in their deception and very selective about their victim. They watched the gentleman as he came into the bank and then carried out this despicable and callous theft.

“If you recognise any of these three men please contact us as soon as possible on 101. If you have any information that you think might aid our investigation please do get in touch.”

NatWest added: “The safety and security of our customers is of utmost importance to us and we’d encourage our customers to follow these tips when using ATM’s:

Scan the whole ATM area before you approach it. Avoid using the ATM if there are suspicious looking individuals around.

Check to see if anything looks unusual or suspicious about the ATM or if it looks like it has been tampered with.

If it appears to have any attachments to the card slot, cash slot or keypad, do not use it. If possible, alert nearby staff or call the police.

Stand close to the ATM and shield the keypad with your hand when keying in your PIN.

Check that others in the queue keep a good distance from you.

If your card gets jammed or retained by the machine or no cash comes out, report this immediately to your bank or building society, ideally using your mobile phone while you are still at the machine.

Keep your PIN secret. Never reveal your PIN to anyone, whether that is someone claiming to be from your bank, a police officer or, especially, a “helpful” stranger.

Be especially cautious if strangers try to distract you or offer to help at an ATM, even if your card is stuck or you are experiencing difficulty with the transaction.

Regularly check your account balance and keep your receipt to check against your statement

Your personal safety is our over-riding concern. If you ever feel worried about the activity of others around you when using an ATM then leave the area as soon as possible and report any concerns that you have to the police or the bank.
