THEFTS from unlocked cars and houses in Grantham have increased dramatically over the last month and police are urging people to take responsibility for their belongings.

Inspector Nigel Storey said patrols have been increased but he still needs help to stop the criminals.

He said: “It is clear that people are not taking personal responsibility and they are leaving items on show. Opportunist thieves will try car doors looking for valuables and stealing what is left on show. Leave it on show expect it to go.”

Insp Storey said it only takes a couple of seconds for a thief to steal something from a car but it can lead to a lot of inconvenience to replace stolen items.

And it is not just cars that are being left unlocked. Burglars have got into several houses in the town recently by simply walking in through an unlocked back door.

Police are distributing leaflets around hotspot areas to warn people of the risk of crime, which is particularly happening in residential areas.

Insp Storey added: “People seem to lock their vehicles in a car park but leave them unlocked on their drive.

“If you spot anyone acting suspiciously around unattended vehicles then please get in touch with us immediately.”

Several arrests have been made in connection with some of the incidnets, but police are urging people to remain vigilant.
