Warning after “water board” thief targets elderly Grantham woman

A THIEF posing as a “water board” worker is targeting elderly people in Grantham, police warn.

On Wednesday (April 13) in Bridge End Road an elderly woman answered the door to someone claiming to be from the water board saying he needed to turn her water supply off.

Thankfully, the woman asked to see the man’s identification, at which point he ran off.

Police are urging others to act in the same way. This woman did exactly the right thing.

A police spokesman said: “Anyone who works for a utility company will have ID and they should always be challenged. Genuine workers will never mind if you call their employers to check. Their ID will carry a phone number so you can do this.

“Residents are being urged to always demand ID and to never let people into their homes unless it is produced and it has been checked.”

Anyone with any concerns about callers to their house should ring the police immediately.

Anyone with any information can call Lincolnshire Police on 0300 111 0300 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
