Staff at Grantham’s ‘Pets At Home’ store have announced the sad news that Chubbs, the famous feline regularly seen curled on the counter and amongst the aisles, has been killed in a road collision.

The popular ginger tabby was run over and killed last week, to the shock of staff who had all grown fond of their most frequent customer during his visits over the past three years.

Shop assistant Hannah Snow said: “The whole store and members of the public are devastated and in shock.”

“He was so very loved by everyone - people would come in just to see him and play with him.

“We are so very sad to have to say goodbye to him at such a young age.”

In October the Journal reported on Chubbs - full title Lord Chubbington - and how he had made the pet store on Sankt Augustin Way his second home.

A photo taken by reader Genevieve Nesbitt of Chubbs waiting patiently outside for the shop’s doors to open generated more than 1,500 likes on the Journal’s Facebook page and numerous stories about his antics in store.

Chubbs lived at a nearby flat and was known as Marshmallow to his owners.

Hannah sent one of the last photos taken of Chubbs enjoying his bed next to the tills, and is encouraging people to share their memories of Chubbs.
