Plans to convert a former children’s home into a 20-room hotel and six apartments, located next to Huntingtower Community Primary Academy, have been approved by South Kesteven District Council.

An initial application came before the planning committee back in November, but was refused due to concerns that the development would overlook into the primary school. These worries particularly related to the construction of a new two-storey residential apartment block to the rear of the site, as well as the upper windows of the vacant The Willows children’s home, which is to form the hotel.

Yesterday an amended design came back before the development control committee, with the apartment block reduced to one storey, obscure glazing up to 1.7 metres in the upper hotel windows, with cill openings similarly restricted, and a 2.4 metre fence between the hotel site and the school.

Headteacher of Huntingtower Community Primary Academy, Mark Anderson, had previously expressed his concerns on behalf of the school, on how the development would effect their ability to safeguard pupils. However, in a letter to SKDC he expressed his delight that the applicants had since actively worked with them to resolve all of their concerns, praising them for being ‘accommodating and understanding’.

On hearing of the changes made to the application, Councillor Robert Reid added: “There is some reward to being on this committee, in seeing that an applicant has come back in a right and proper way.”

The plans were unanimously approved by 11 votes in favour.
