Former Royal chef Shaun Mason has gone back to school to work with children as part of a national campaign to encourage them to take an early interest in food, cookery and healthy eating.
Shaun, 27, worked for four years at Buckingham Palace as a pastry chef, where highlights included cooking at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. He also worked at TV chef Rick Stein’s Padstow restaurant for a season.
Having returned from the palace to his home village of South Witham, Shaun has been spending time with the children of his former primary school as part of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts’ ‘Chefs Adopt A School’ Scheme.
Shaun said: “I really enjoy spending time with the children at South Witham Community Primary School and teaching them about food, cookery and healthy eating. You get such a positive response from them and it’s clear they really enjoy the hands-on aspects of the lessons.”
Shaun is now chef patron at the Angel Inn in South Witham. A former pupil of the Charles Read High School at Corby Glen, he later attended Stamford College where he studied for NVQs in catering. He joined the team at the palace having spent three years working as a chef at Barnsdale Lodge.
Shaun said: “I’m passionate about this scheme, not least because it teaches the children some important lessons about healthy eating as part of our efforts to tackle childhood obesity.
“I’ve been back in South Witham for a year now and I’m really enjoying running my own local business.”
And it’s great to be able to put something back into the community in this way,” he added.
