King’s tops county school league

KING’S School is one of only three in the county to have every GCSE pupil achieve at least five A* - C grades, including maths and English.
The new Department for Education figures show improvement by almost every school in the area and the county itself moved into the top 25 per cent in the country.
King’s School headteacher Charles Dormer said he was delighted with the efforts of pupils and staff.
Mr Dormer said: “The GCSE 100 per cent five A* to C grades including maths and English achieved by our Year 11 reflects their interest and hard work, the support of their parents for this school and the excellent monitoring and intervention procedures coordinated by Justin Dixon, assistant head teacher for pupil progress, and his team.
“Boys achieved excellent grades in respected subjects which will prepare them well for later life. Six months on, those boys are now well on their way to success at AS level, while continuing to enjoy the life of sport, music, team spirit and public service that we promote.”
Coun Patricia Bradwell, executive councillor for Children’s Services at Lincolnshire County Council hailed the results as a great success for the county.
She said: “These are difficult times for young people but their achievements and qualifications should help towards securing jobs and other opportunities.
“Together with their parents, carers and teachers, they all deserve recognition for an outstanding year of success for Lincolnshire.”
St Hugh’s Mathematics and Computing College came bottom of the list of Grantham area schools ranked by percentage of pupils achieving five A* to C grades including maths and English.
However, the school teaches a far greater proportion of pupils from poorer families, with more than 20 per cent of pupils who sat their GCSEs in 2011 on free school meals.
l King’s School announced this week that Frank Hedley, currently deputy head at King Edward VI School in Aston, Brimingham, will become the school’s new headteacher.
Mr Hedley will start at the school after the Easter holidays and work alongide current headteacher Charles Dormer until the end of the school year.
