A NEW year heralds a fresh start at Charles Read High School, as pupils and staff welcome a new principal into the fold.

A familiar face around Grantham, Richard Johnston has joined the Corby Glen school from St Hugh’s Maths and Computing College in Grantham, where he was headteacher.

Grantham-born and bred Mr Johnston said he is looking forward to taking up the reins at Charles Read.

He added: “I see this as an opportunity to lead what I consider to be a very good school. The atmosphere within the school between staff and students is fantastic and this positive relationship will lead to Charles Read being very successful in the future.”

Mr Johnston attended local schools Spittlegate Primary, National Junior and King’s School.

At 18, he moved to Brighton and later attended the Chichester Institute of Higher Education before beginning his teaching career at Hove Park School as a maths teacher.

In January 2000, Mr Johnston returned to Grantham to take up a post at St Hugh’s as head of maths, working his way up to the position of headteacher.
