Pupil says Priory Ruskin head’s trust makes him behave in school
Pupils celebrate Ofsted report with headteacher Clive Shepherd.
Students and staff at the Priory Ruskin Academy are celebrating after receiving an “outstanding” Ofsted report for behaviour and safety.
Behaviour is one of the areas that has seen dramatic improvement over the last few years since the Grantham academy formed.
Headteacher Clive Shepherd said: “Behaviour was judged to be inadequate but the academy focuses on respect and aiming high and I think the students have embraced it, it’s humbling for me to see.”
David Croke, 14, used to get into trouble a lot but he says Mr Shepherd has helped put him “on the straight and narrow”.
He said: “Sir understands, he always has lots of time for me even when I’m being a complete pain.
“He’s backing me to do well and has a lot of trust in me, it would be rude and disrespectful not to give it back.
“I’ve never had a target for anything but now when I stay out of trouble I can go on to bigger things. When you realise someone thinks you can do it, it makes you believe in yourself more.”
The Ofsted report, which has not yet been published, graded the school in three other areas. It gained a “good” in leadership and management and teaching and learning.
Results still need improving but Mr Shepherd said the school had been in the bottom percentage of all schools in the country. Now they are in the top 23 percentage of similar schools.
He said: “The inspectors were saying they can’t believe how much progress we’ve made in a two-year timespan. We don’t settle for second best anymore. We are hoping that the summer results will put us up to ‘outstanding’ in the other three areas.”
