VOLUNTEERS who regularly clean the River Witham were saddened to fill 22 bags with rubbish chucked in by selfish litter-droppers.

Grantham Rivercare volunteers give their time several times a year to clean a stretch of the river through the town, and they never fail to come away with full bin liners.

Rivercare leader John Knowles said: “At first glance there didn’t appear to be a great deal to clear. Two hours later we thought differently having collected no less than 22 full bags of rubbish, of mainly cans and bottles, three shopping trolleys, the remains of a wheelchair and a ladder.

“It is sad to think that each and every item had been discarded by someone, people who obviously have no appreciation of the river and its surroundings.”

Fifteen volunteers joined in the clean-up operation last Saturday, focussing on “tackling the delights” in a stretch between Bridge End Road and Wyndham Park.

John said: “If it wasn’t for our regular clean-ups, what sort of a state would things get into?

“So many thanks to all those of you who turned out on Saturday and did such a brilliant job, and also to Pat and Dave from South Kesteven District Council who see that all we collect is properly disposed of on completion.”
