A LANDLORD took a big step to reduce his carbon footprint recently when he decided to put solar panels on the roof of his pub.

John Cockroft, who runs The Castlegate in Grantham, paid £16,000 for the photovoltic array in an attempt to become more energy efficient.

He said: “You’ve got to be forward thinking nowadays. I’m happy to be taking the first step towards being self-sufficient.”

John, pictured, had a number of reasons for putting the solar panels on his roof.

He said: “It’s going to reduce my bills quite considerably, if you don’t use it you can feed it back into the National Grid and my carbon footprint will be massively reduced. I think people should be doing more to reduce their carbon footprint.”

John is not yet sure how much money he will save by using the solar panels or whether he will be able to sell any energy back to the grid.

But he is pleased that he is already reducing the amount of carbon dioxide that is being produced at the power plants on his behalf.
