A girl who was distraught when a tree she had planted was vandalised has planted a new one in its place.
Nine-year-old Lucy Smith, who attends Cliffedale Primary School, had planted a silver birch in Queen Elizabeth Park in Grantham to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
But in November the tree was snapped in half. Lucy’s dad, Neil, of Tissington Road, said: “She was gutted. She used to go down there every month to see it. I promised her I would sort something out.”
Mr Smith spoke to the Mayor of Grantham, Ian Selby, and through the district council a new tree was found.
Recently Coun Selby and Lucy planted the tree in place of the old one in the park.
Mr Smith said: “She is over the moon about it. The council really bent over backwards to get it sorted out.”
