Thirteen volunteers braved the harsh wintry weather on Saturday to clean up a stretch of the River Witham.
They removed litter, furniture and the inevitable shopping trolley from the water between Bridge End Road through to the other end of Wyndham Park.
Grantham Rivercare leader John Knowles said: “After two hours of hard work we collected an amazing 170kg of rubbish. This comprised eleven sacks of bottles, cans and fast food wrappers, two bikes, a shopping trolley, a lorry tyre, a scooter, a bookcase, a plastic chair and sundry other items.
“Considering that the last clean-up was carried out just before Christmas, it is very disappointing that so much rubbish should have been dumped along the river since then.”
The multi-award winning Rivercare group was set by Grantham Civic Society in October 2004. Since then, volunteers have completed 65 clean-ups and during that time have collected an estimated 11 tonnes of rubbish.
“What a state the river would be in if it wasn’t for the efforts of these dedicated volunteers,” added Mr Knowles.
“Rivercare is very much a team effort with support from Keep Britain Tidy and South Kesteven District Council, and sponsorship provided by Anglian Water and Sainsbury’s.”
The next Rivercare clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, April 8.
New recruits are always welcome.
