£800,000 FACELIFT FOR MUSEUM CONSIDERED

MAJOR changes costing more than £800,000 could be made at Grantham Museum to bring it up to date and meet the expectations of an increasingly discerning public.

MAJOR changes costing more than 800,000 could be made at Grantham Museum to bring it up to date and meet the expectations of an increasingly discerning public.Lincolnshire County Council is looking at ways of bringing its museums up to date, but has yet to decide which ones will get priority.

Next week councillors will consider suggestions for improvements to five of the main attractions in the county.

Consultants appointed to assess existing facilities say although interesting material is displayed at Grantham, exhibits need to be redesigned to allow visitors to look at them properly.

They suggest that "personalities" like Sir Isaac Newton, policewoman Edith Smith, dollmaker Madame Montanari and original museum curator Henry Preston should be used to tell the story of the town either through audio-visual exhibitions or touchscreen displays.

Other suggestions include using more information from the public about their recollections of important events like the Dambusters raids in the Second World War or the 1979 general election when Grantham-born Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister.

Councillors will consider other proposals for museums in Skegness, Stamford, Gainsborough and Coningsby to decide their priorities for developing the attractions.

County council head of heritage services Jonathan Platt said: "We're taking the report to the committee with a view to alerting councillors to the fact that this is what we would like to do in an ideal world. It's the starting point for trying to get the finance together."
