Tuesday, 3pm - A NOVELIST will battle Terry Pratchett and other authors for a prestigious award at the 67th World Science Fiction Convention in Montreal.George Mann, 30, of Thorold Road, Barrowby, has been told his first ever novel, 'The Affinity Bridge', has been nominated along with five other books for the Sidewise Award for Alternate History.
Terry Pratchett is nominated in the same category for his novel, 'Nation'.
George said: "I'm over the moon. I'm quite honoured to be on the list because the other writers on the short-list are fantastic.
"The book has sold very well and the publisher was so happy that I have just signed a deal for another six books.
"There is plenty of tough competition though, including Terry Pratchett. I've read the books of all the authors up for the reward and I've got a lot of respect for them."
The awards ceremony will be held in Montreal, Canada, in August and George is hopeful of being able to attend.
'The Affinity Bridge' is due to be released in the United States in July.
He has already finished writing the next story in the series which will be printed this summer.
George said:"The following books will be a big, long series featuring the same detective. I've just written the second, 'The Osiris Ritual', which will come out in July and in paperback in August.
"It is about a rogue agent who everyone thought was dead but who turns up after five years.
"I would absolutely encourage anyone else to give writing a go. It is hard work but if you've got an idea, just get your head down and have a go."
