Call for action on bus pass justice

Friday, 11.45am - A DAY of action calling for bus pass justice for Grantham's pensioners is being proposed by campaigner Lynda Coutts.

Friday, 11.45am - A DAY of action calling for bus pass justice for Grantham's pensioners is being proposed by campaigner Lynda Coutts. In June, Mrs Coutts collected hundreds of signatures for a petition calling for equal rights for bus passengers in South Kesteven.

She joined the Journal in campaigning aginst the district council's decision to restrict free journeys while every other council in Lincolnshire allowed bus pas holders unlimited travel.

Now Mrs Coutts is so fed up with SKDC's refusal to budge on the decision, she has decided more direct action is needed.

She said: "Why not have a day of action where all of us who feel alienated by the council use the buses all day within the confines of the hours laid down by SKDC - even if this means staying on the same bus for eight hours.

"This would show the powers that be that there is a need to look at the matter urgently.

"The cost of our travel to SKDC would go to show how determined we are to get justice.

"Although this may appear on the face of it to be nothing more than blackmail, it seems to be the only way remaining to get this grave injustice, which was unilaterally imposed on us, rectified."

Mrs Coutts wants as many bus pass holders - the over-60s and eligible disabled - affected by the restrictions to join in the day of action on Friday, October 17.

She envisages supporters getting on their local bus after the 9.30am time restriction is lifted and travelling on it for as long as possible.

Since unrestricted free travel was introduced in Lincolnshire in July, SKDC has been presented with petitions from Grantham and Stamford, which more than 1,500 people have signed.

But the council has refused to reconsider, saying the situation will be reviewed early next year.

A spokesman said: "The situation remains the same."

We want to know how many supporters are willing to join the day of action on October 17 and call for bus pass justice.
