Thursday, 3.40pm - FURIOUS people living in New Street are up in arms after half a dozen portakabins were erected outside their homes.People living on the residential estate, the majority of whom are elderly, contacted the Journal this week to complain after finding out the portakabins could be in place for up to six months.

The portakabins are being used for storage by SKDC workmen while improvements are made to council houses in the area.

Disabled pensioner, Sandra-Anne Jacklin, leases a ground floor on the street and was given no warning by the council about the portakabins.

She said: "It is like living on a building site at the moment - it's just so close that it's almost on top of you.

"The council didn't even tell us lease holders about it. We had to find out from our neighbours.

"They should have at least given us some notice."

The portakabins were installed on Monday. Initially, Mrs Jacklin found a portaloo had been placed right outside of her kitchen but this has now been moved.

She said: "The irony is that the lease holders are the people most effected and we aren't having any work done.

"It is as if lease holders don't have any rights at all. The council are just riding roughshod over us.

"I've been in touch with my solicitor to see if anything can be done."

A spokesman for SKDC said: "We are carrying out an extensive range of improvements to properties that we own. This includes new bathrooms, kitchens and rewiring.

"We are phasing this work which will last up to 24 weeks.

"We've have been and will continue to work closely with both our tenants and developer, who is a member of the considerate contractor scheme, to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum whilst the improvements are carried out."
