Wednesday, 4.15pm - A MAN has retired after 50 years working for the same company.David Pearce, of Croft Drive, retired as works engineer at The Stanborough Press, in Londonthorpe Road, last Thursday, along with his wife Jan.

The couple's workmates threw a big farewell breakfast and presented David with a 50-shaped cake to mark his half-century with the company.

David said: "I could have retired last year but I decided to carry on to June 2008 to finish my half-century, and also because it would enable me to retire at the same time as my wife."

Managing director Paul Hammond said: "David Pearce is the first person to notch up 50 years with this company.

"Others have made it to 47 years but David is the first person to make it to 50 years' continuous service."

David was born in Watford and joined The Stanborough Press, when it was based there, in 1958 as an apprentice lithographic printer while also studying at the London School of Printing.

He married his first wife Edna in 1963.

When The Stanborough Press's Watford site burned down a year later, the couple moved with the company to Grantham and lived in Great Gonerby for 30 years.

They had two sons, Brian and Russell. Edna died 15 years ago from cancer.

David married Australian Jan in 1998, after she joined the company as chief accountant.

Finance director Graham Barton said: "Jan has been fantastic. The company could not have achieved what it has achieved without her."

David and Jan plan to make the most of retirement by going on plenty of caravan holidays and continuing their work at the Seventh day Adventist church in Dudley Road, where David is deacon and Jan is elder.

David will also be able to indulge in his passion for repairing and rebuilding old cars.
