SPECIALIST language college status has been awarded to Kesteven and Grantham Girls' School.

SPECIALIST language college status has been awarded to Kesteven and Grantham Girls' School.KGGS is already a specialist science college, and had its modern languages specialism confirmed this week.

Headteacher Graham Burks said: "The extra funding we receive will be spent partly on the school and partly on working with the community.

"It should be quite an exciting time"

Language staff from KGGS will work with primary schools to help get children learning languages early.

They will also provide support for language departments in other secondary schools.

The new status will also help KGGS build on overseas links, including its long-standing partnership with a school in Japan.

In the early stages the school will concentrate on teaching French, German and Spanish, but may expand its department to teach other languages.

The new status will mean the school will receive around 270,000 from the Government over the next three years.
