Monday, 3.35pm - A TEN-day extravganza of events and activities in Stathern, in the Vale of Belvoir, got off to a flying start this weekend.The highlight of the weekend's Stathern Festival programme was the full to capacity Party in the Park, which organisers say was the best ever.

An auction of promises held on Friday at The Plough Inn raised more than 2,000. Villagers and visitors also enjoyed a teddy bear exhibition, a children's disco, a fun dog show, including a guest appearance from rare Otterhound Max from The Plough Inn, a quiz and teddy bear parachuting from St Guthlac's Church.

The festival, which raised 10,000 for local good causes last year, continues until Sunday.

Friday sees the start of a three-day beer festival at The Plough Inn and the Summer Ball at the Red Lion's marquee tonight.

Saturday's events are a children's art workshop, a treasure hunt starting at the War Memorial Institute at 2.30pm, a strawberry tea at 1Chapel Lane between 2.30 and 5pm and a casino night at the Red Lion from 8pm.

The climax of the festival is on Sunday with the Stathern 10k road race, a Songs of Praise service starting at 6pm at the church and a jazz and hog roast evening at The Plough Inn from 8pm.
