Wednesday, 9.55am - A HAIR and beauty salon has been built at a Grantham school as part of a new initiative to enable students to study vocational courses alongside traditional subjects.Over the summer, a classroom at Grantham Church High School was transformed into a fully functioning salon.

Thirty students, including one boy, have signed up to study for a City and Guilds qualification in Salon Services alongside their GCSEs.

They have been given uniforms and are being tutored by professional hair stylists and beauticians as well as working with staff from Serenity, which is based at Belton Woods.

More than 100 senior students have chosen to study for vocational qualifications in salon services, construction, public services, business and catering since they were introduced at the school.

Headteacher Robin Castle says enabling students to learn vocational skills has been popular.

He said: "This means they get a head start when they go to college. Because they start at a much higher level, it will enable students to start their NVQ professional qualification earlier.

"Not all schools have the space and facilities to be able to do this. We think we're the only school in Grantham doing this and we've already had enquiries from other schools who would like to get involved.

"There is a real buzz about this around school and when the students are in their salon uniforms or chef's whites the whole place transforms.

"Year 9s are about to choose what subjects they want to do and a lot of them are very excited about this."
