Monday, 8am - HOSPITALS in Lincolnshire have achieved a financial surplus for the first time ever.United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust achieved a planned surplus of 1.5 million. It was also given additional funding of 11 million by Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust, creating a 12.5 million surplus.

Chief executive Gary Walker said: "In the last year we achieved more improvements than at any other time in our history. We created a clinically-led organisation, employed more staff, earned more income, bought more equipment, tackled quality and safety as a priority and improved our overall efficiency.

"It has been a good year for the Trust but there are always areas in which we can improve and I would welcome input from the public about what we can do to improve services for them."

The 12.5 million surplus puts the trust on course to achieve its duty to break even over a five year period. In recent years the Trust has been heavily in debt.

It must reach financial stability if it is to achieve its goal of becoming a foundation trust - which will free it from direct government control.

Trust Chairman David Bowles said: "Every one of our 7,000 staff, in every service, contributed to turning this organisation around. Just about every aspect of the hundreds of services we provide across Lincolnshire have shown improvements and we would like to thank our staff for their efforts."

The trust says it has achieved a number of other successes over the past year.

Clostridium difficile infections have been reduced by 41 per cent, and MRSA infections by 37 per cent and waiting times for treatment, diagnosis and A&E have all been reduced.
