Monday, 4pm - HUGE illuminous 'low bridge' signs appeared on Barrowby Road bridge last week latest attempt to combat bridge strikes. The Journal launched a bridge strike campaign in February to draw attention to the problem which regularly brings traffic to a standstill and causes a safety risk to pedestrians, other motorists and train commuters.

Grantham has three of the most struck bridges in the country at Springfield Road, Harlaxton Road and Barrowby Road.

Network Rail say Barrowby Road bridge has been hit ten times so far this year. They hope the new signs will make HGV drivers more aware that they are approaching a low bridge.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "Grantham is famous for its three bridges and we have had quite a few incidents there.

"Bridge strikes are a big issue in the railway industry. When there is a strike we have to get someone out to inspect them to make sure it's safe for trains to run over it.

"This obviously leads to delays and costs money. We think the new signs will advise drivers to be more aware of the size of their vehicles."
