Friday, 10.45am - COUNTY councillor John Hurst has stepped in to try to help solve the problems plaguing St. Peter's Hill Surgery. The councillor for Grantham South, who is a patient at the surgery, as well as a member of the health and scrutiny committee for Lincolnshire, decided to get involved after receiving a flurry of complaints from concerned constituents.

Coun Hurst said: "The shear number of difficulties and the number of people talking about them convinced me there are certain problems.

"The doctor and practice manager were very willing to listen to everything I said and invited me to work with them on finding solutions to these difficulties.

"We will be working together until we can get all of the difficulties resolved."

Some of the problems raised through the Journal in recent weeks, as well as those reported to Mr Hurst, include patients being stuck in long phone queues, lack of available appointments and being unable to see a regular 'family' doctor.

Mr Hurst believes the situation could be improved with a move to a bigger site.

He said: "The biggest grievance is in problems getting through on the telephone. Long telephone delays would be eased if there were more staff.

"They tell me they have made considerable improvements in this area recently but the surgery want more staff and this will be possible when they find a larger building."

Many of the problems experienced by the surgery are common in other areas of Lincolnshire but the size of the surgery and the number of patients make matters worse.

Mr Hurst was told at the meeting that St. Peter's Hill Surgery has 18,000 patients and nine doctors.

He is keen for anyone who continues to have difficulties to get in touch with him.

Mr Hirst said: "I need the help of the people of Grantham to keep me in the picture.

"People shouldn't expect instant changes but I hope my involvement will be part of that process.

"I can be a link between families and providers of the service."

John Hurst can be contacted on 01476 564219.
