Wednesday, 12pm - Police in Grantham will be able to call on the Taser stun gun to subdue criminals, in a new trial of the weapon.Previously, only authorised firearms officers were allowed to use the weapons, but now other trained officers will be allowed to when facing violent siutations.

Eighty firearms officers are trained to use the devices and a further 21 officers can now be deployed to violent incidents with Tasers.

Seven of those officers operate in the south of the county, covering the Grantham area.

Asst Chief Constable Peter Davies said: "We hope this extended use of Taser will enable early resolution of conflict situations and reduce the possibility of injury to officers and offenders.

"The Taser is an extremely effective device which also acts as a visible deterrent to violent offenders."

Lincolnshire Police was one of the first five forces in the country to be allocated Tasers for initial trials of the weapon.

They have a range of 21ft and use 50,000 Volts to temporarily incapacitate offenders. Each weapon has an internal memory which records any use of the device.
