Sunday, 8am - A NEW volunteering scheme designed to help people make the most of their skills has been launched in Grantham.Grantham Community Voluntary Services has launched a new 'person-centred' system to help match volunteers to positions that will best suit their skills.

Pauline Dove, who is running the project said: "We're looking for jobseekers who are looking to volunteering as a pathway back to work or students looking to do somethnig in the summer months.

"In this area there are about 100 different charities and we work with all of those groups and match volunteers up with opportunities."

Volunteer Tim Wood has recently set up his own hypnotherapy and counselling firm and offered his services as a volunteer. Grantham CVS found him a placement at Stocken Prison.

He said: "The voluntary sector could use these skills and and it helps me put out my name and gain wider experience.

"People get a buzz out of helping somebody, whether it's paid or not.

The service has also set up a village outreach service, being run by Paddy Perry.

Paddy attends public events in villages in the Grantham area and helps provide a link between organisations in need of volunteers and people who would like to offer help.

Paddy said: "If you live here in Grantham and want to volunteer you walk in to our office, fill in a form and we try to match you - but in the villages people don't have the same level of access.

"I'm attending lots of village events and taking a roadshow out to promote the things we're doing to get the word out. Often we bring together people who want to volunteer and organisations looking for volunteers in the same village."
