A seemingly common accident blackspot nowadays on the A1 at Great Ponton, this incident occurred in the same area of the Great North Road half a century ago.

A furniture van driver from Hitchin, in Hertfordshire, left his vehicle at the side of the road after it had broken down.

He went for assistance to effect repairs but on his return the driver found his van had been involved in a collision with a lorry from the Sleaford area.

Several items of furniture in the van, owned by a Hitchin removal firm, were damaged, but no-one sustained any serious injury.
