Last week we asked if our featured photograph was of the first Harrowby United ever Harrowby United. It wasn’t - this was.
We’re grateful to Mrs Wood for sending the photograph in and naming the vast majority of those pictured in the fist Harrowby United team photograph prior to the 1950-51 season.
Mrs Wood of Melbourne Road in Grantham said: “My then boyfriend joined the team and played for many years until after we were married and had two children. I took on the job of club secretary so ended up washing the kit every week and did I get paid for it? No, I got a packet of washing powder. But it kept him out of mischief I suppose.”
Harrowby United has recently been resurrected as a club and the team is enjoying a successful first season in the United Counties League Divison One.
Mrs Wood said: “I used to follow them all over. First in the Grantham League, then they got a bit more ambitious and we went to the Lincoln area and played at Sincil Bank before going in to the East Midlands League. We used to go out to all the pits all around Derbyshire and they were some tough games. It’s nice to see the club going again.”
