Memory Lane: Knock out fun for Kempton’s staff as Goblins win the day

They may have been soggy and thoroughly worn out but the members of the Grantham Goblins team, pictured, had every reason to be delighted after emerging as the champions of Kempton’s It’s A Knock Out competition in September 1987.

The ‘home’ side from the Dysart Road knitwear factory fought off the challenge of teams from other Kempton factories in Leicester, Grimsby and Sleaford to be victorious. Runners up were the Woolly Pully Wanderers from Leicester.

The teams had to compete over a “diabolical” course designed by Chris Ellis from the Leicester factory and, needless to say, they all ended up soaked to the skin.

But it was all in a good cause, for the Goblins weren’t the only winners on the day, the event also raised around £1,500 for Grantham’s Ambergate School.
