Online petition urging safe buffer zones for turbines set up

Wednesday, 4.15pm - AN online petition urging the Prime Minister to introduce buffer zones between wind turbines and homes has been started by villagers fighting plans to build two wind farms close to villages in the Vale of Belvoir, near Grantham.Mo Caswell, who lives in Normanton and is a member of campaign group BLOT - Belvoir Locals Oppose Turbines - started the petition on the Downing Street website on Tuesday.
The aim is to ban the building of industrial wind turbines within 2km (1.2 miles) of homes unless the right to protection from associated problems is waived by all households within the buffer zone.
A spokesman for BLOT said: "This policy has been adopted in many other countries to alleviate the health problems being experienced from low frequency noise and flicker.
"BLOT is encouraging everyone to sign up to this and help highlight to the Government that, while attempting to combat climate change, people's health should not be sacrificed."
Two energy firms have shown an interest in building wind farms within a few miles of Normanton, Bottesford, Long Bennington, Allington, Sedgebrook, Foston, Muston, Claypole and Westborough.
Infinergy's planning application to build 10 turbines at Thackson's Well was rejected by the district council in March and the firm plans to appeal against the decision.
Last week, Ridgewind installed a temporary mast for measuring wind speeds near Beacon Hill, in Bottesford, which will help the firm decide whether to submit plans for turbines in the area.
The two sites are within half-a-mile of each other and some homes are within 700m, well inside the proposed 2km buffer zone, of the planned turbines.
