Tuesday, 3.15pm - SHOPPERS are being encouraged to "Get It In Grantham" to help combat the effects of the recession on independent retailers and small businesses. The campaign is the brainchild of Conservative candidate for Grantham Nick Boles who launched it in town on Friday with Conservative councillors and members of Grantham Business Club.
Speaking at the launch at Grantham's oldest independent retailer HH Cox, in Westgate, Mr Boles said: "Times are tough and everybody is having to tighten their belts and cut back on expenditure.
"The first people to suffer are local shops.
"In tough economic times, it is important that we all pull together and support local businesses and shops.
"If we want to help local people keep their jobs, we all need to Get it in Grantham.
"We're not going to stop the recession with this campaign but if everyone in Grantham can give local businesses more support, it could mean the difference between them surviving and not surviving."
Deputy leader of South Kesteven District Council Paul Carpenter is backing the campaign.
He said: "The whole point is to ensure we keep a buoyant local economy."
Mr Boles wants councillors across the political spectrum, businesses and everyone who lives and shops in Grantham to get behind the campaign by thinking about where they take their business.
He pledged to shop locally when he can and got off to a good start by buying some accessories at HH Cox after the campaign launch.
Ben Newcombe-Jones, joint owner of HH Cox and a district councillor, said supporting independent retailers will encourage other businesses to come to Grantham.
He said: "This will not only support businesses already here but new businesses will open. Having a good mix of independent retailers and high street businesses gives a town a good character."
Mr Boles also plans to launch "Shop In Stamford" and "Buy It In Bourne" campaigns.
