Thursday, 2.15pm - CELEBRITIES from the world of sports were in Grantham this week to be a part of a world record-breaking event launched in the town. The famous faces were dotted about the South Kesteven Sports Stadium on Tuesday at the South West Lincolnshire Schools Games, which was attended by hundreds of primary school children.
Among the stars was swimming legend and Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew, Roderick Bradley aka Spartan in TV's Gladiators, and British Judo champion Tom Davis.
When the time came to attempt to smash the world record for the number of people skipping simultaneously, they all grabbed a rope and joined in.
The attempt was organised by Lincolnshire Schools Sport Partnership in conjunction with partnerships in Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent.
Although it will be a week before the result is announced, organisers hope the 50,000 children involved will easily beat the current record of 18,900.
After the big skip, Roderick said: "Everyone had to do three minutes of skipping and I thought to myself that three minutes would be easy, but my legs are killing me.
"It was a great spectacle with everyone doing it together, and it was a lot of fun.
"Sports events like this are fantastic. I remember sports days where schools came together from when I was at Harlaxton Primary School, and they are the days that really drove me on. Days like this are very important and today has been put together fantastically."
He was joined by international paraplegic athlete - and Grantham man - Clive Wright, 800m world championship medallist Jo Fenn, Iron Man champion Roger Canham, and local equestrian rising star Emma Sheardown.
The day, organised by the South West Lincolnshire Schools Sports Partnership and South Kesteven District Council, was run by more than 60 young sports leaders from 10 partnership secondary schools and further education colleges.
It had an Olympic theme with an opening and closing ceremony, and following the big skip the youngsters did multi-skills activities.
