Tuesday, 5.05pm - A COUPLE celebrating their golden wedding this weekend were similarly blessed with glorious sunshine for their big day 50 years ago.Richard and Sylvia Lewis of Edwards Street first met as teenagers at a college dance at the Guildhall. The pair stayed in touch when Richard's national service sent him as far as Malaya and they were married four years later at St Anne's Church.
Sylvia, 71, recalled: "It was a lovely, hot summer day and it actually stayed that way for the next fortnight.
"In fact, the day after the wedding we went to Brighton for our honeymoon and both got absolutely sun burnt."
The pair put that bad experience behind them and regularly enjoy holidays abroad in sunny climates.
Richard, 73, is a keen indoor and outdoor bowler who has won numerous trophies down the years. He has also been known to enjoy the odd cribbage success as well.
Perhaps his most interesting hobby is making his own wine.
He said: "We've got some friends who bring round fruit and ask me to make it into wine. I enjoy it and it's not as difficult as you would think."
Despite Living in Grantham since he was two-years-old, Richard still considers himself a Devonshire man.
Sylvia believes the key to a successful marriage is to enjoy being around one another.
She said: "We get on well together and like each other's company.
"We look after each other. I had triple bypass surgery three years ago and Roger had a heart attack but we got through it together.
"I also think you have to share some interests but not necessarily all. It's good to have your own as well."
The couple plan to celebrate 50 years together with a party for family and friends at Great Gonerby Social Club.
