Monday, 11.45am - A TEENAGER who cultivated cannabis plants at his flat on the Lincolnshire coast was spared jail by a judge today.

Anthony Roberts, 19, was caught with cannabis valued at 450 when police raided the property in Trusthorpe, near Mablethorpe.

Roberts, 19, now of St Helens Close, Grantham, pleaded guilty to possessing 183.3 grammes of cannabis with intent to supply on 18 September 2007.

He also admitted producing a controlled drug.

He was ordered to carry out 120 hours community punishment and placed under probation supervision for two years.

Lincoln Crown Court heard officers found 23 fully grown cannabis plants in a specially designed production area in the loft.

Chris Lowe, prosecuting, said heating, irrigation and lighting systems were all being used to produce the plants.

Over 90 bags of cannabis weighing 183 grammes and worth 450 were also discovered in the living room of the flat

Two sets of digital scales and a book titled "marajuana horticulture" was also found in the kitchen, the court was told.

Roberts made no comment when he was questioned by the police.

Cat Sjolin, mitigating, asked for Roberts to be given a last chance.

Miss Sjolin said: "Custody will incarcerate him, but do little else. He was growing the drugs for his own use, but later spread to supply.

"He is a very pleasant young man who presents himself as a gentle giant."

Passing sentence Recorder Peter Joyce QC told Roberts: "I could just lock you up, but I don't think that would do any good. Break the order and you will go to prison."
